The importance of having good or even excellent business acumen should never be downplayed or disregarded in today's highly unpredictable and competitive business arena. This can have a great and direct influence on all those concerned and involved, whether they like it or not. It is therefore a highly critical element for employees to have and cultivate for the survival and progression of anyone's career and the organization they are working for.


Developing and improving one's business acumen will not only make opportunities readily available for the employee to help their organization succeed, but will also make for greater chances for progressing up the corporate ladder. To do this, collective effort should be done, with all the participants acting in unison and harmony, from top management executives down to the bottom line employees in three key areas: knowledge of the business, capacity to formulate sound business plan of actions, and the confidence to act on those plans.

To help an organization develop, enhance, and improve business acumen skills and abilities, business leaders need to understand the nature of the business and to have all the necessary information about their business industry as much as possible.

Having a clear and complete understanding of how your company's business is structured and modeled and knowledge of all its products or services is vital. This can be done simply by having meaningful social interaction with the people within and outside your line of business. This lets one have a clear picture of the overall make up of one’s business and others like it, and have access to the right tools to make it prosper and grow.

Constantly reading up on all relevant information in the form of news, articles, press releases, and other datas will help in keeping one updated on all influencing events of the business, and therefore, allows one to take the necessary steps to address or counter all inherent negative factors, or to keep one in the light of what positive elements that actually work and to utilize them to its full potential.

What Is Business Acumen?

Business acumen is defined as having the ability to make quick decisions and good judgments pertaining to business matters and concerns in order arrive at positive and profitable conclusions, as well as to be able to efficiently and effectively manage the business that is presently engaged in. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and nurture excellent business leadership skills, if a company wishes to succeed and prosper accordingly.

Essentially, it is composed of five factors to develop or improve to have sound business acumen: Brains, Planning, Communication, Resourcefulness, and Responsibility. With a careful assessment of the employee's weaknesses and strengths based on these factors, a concrete plan of action can then be implemented to proceed to the next phase to achieving sound and the desired business acumen for all those involved.
